What's in a (church's) name?

In today's church world it's hard to tell what a church believes just by their name, or so you thought. Apparently it's not so hard after all - Pizza Man has all the answers regarding what the church down the road actually believes, based solely on their name! Click here to see the church name guide!

This Momentary Marriage

I'm currently reading "This Momentary Marriage" by John Piper. I've really just started the book so I can't offer any substantial thoughts about what I've read. However, this quote really struck me :

...the magnificence of marriage in the mind of God seem[s] unintelligible in a modern Western culture, where the main idol is self; and its main doctrine is autonomy; and its central act of worship is being entertained; and its three main shrines are the television, the Internet, and the cinema; and its most sacred genuflection is the uninhibited act of sexual intercourse. Such a culture will find the glory of marriage in the mind of Jesus virtually incomprehensible.

That is so true!

The Demise of the Church

The following is an excerpt from a great post by Billy Birch entitled, "The Demise of the Church: The Church's Love Affair with Modernity":

"The apostle Paul wrote: "I have become all things to all men, so that I may by all means save some" (1 Cor. 9:22 NASB, emphasis added). Many modern Christians have taken this for support of their particular manner in presenting the gospel, even when the means either appear as ethically suspect or are clearly unbiblical or immoral. But was Paul trying to convey the idea that Christians, in an effort to reach people for Jesus Christ, should use whatever means imaginable to capture the sinner's attention?

Paul also admitted, "I do all things for the sake of the gospel, so that I may become a fellow partaker of it" (1 Cor. 9:23 NASB). His motive was rooted in the gospel, not shock value. And since his motive was grounded in the gospel itself, the means he used had to correlate with the holiness of the gospel. The following syllogism will suffice:

1. The gospel is holy.                                                                                                                                                            2. Christians use means in proclaiming the gospel.                                                                                                    3. The means Christians use in proclaiming the gospel must be holy..."

Little Mega-Church

Despite the addition of a laser light show and a rock ‘n’ roll praise band, Jehosaphat Baptist Church just couldn’t seem to increase their attendance.

How to Reach the Masses – Problem solved

I found the clipping I posted below while looking through and old issue of The King’s Business which was a monthly publication of the Bible Institute of Los Angeles from 1910 to 1970. In the first decades of its publication, it was the leading journal for conservative Christianity and the early fundamentalist movement. It’s editor was R.A. Torrey. The clipping below is from the January 1911 edition.

The King’s Business

We debate and argue and suggest solutions and methods for reaching our world. Churches seek to be relevant and adopt all sorts of worldly means in which to attract the masses.

Perhaps we should learn from one of the greatest soul winners and evangelists of all time, Dwight L. Moody (and there are many others who have said the same thing): To reach the masses, go to them.”  We’ve got to get out of the mindset which expects the world to come to us – we must go to them!
