Tag-Along Tuesday

Welcome to my second weekly Tag-Along Tuesday where I share some random posts, sites, etc. that I've come across in my reading over the past week and you might find interesting:
  • Some ideas I'm thinking about for pastoring my family. I've got some work to do on this one...
  • Has Noah's ark been found
  • Something I wish I would have been at: the incredible final service at the Inter-Church Holiness Convention. Watched this three days later in my living room and wept and rejoiced right along with those in attendance - just wish I could have been there...

Wild at Heart by John Eldredge - Review

Wild at Heart: Discovering the Secret of a Man's SoulRecently I read "Wild at Heart: Discovering the Secret of a Man's Soul" for the second time. Actually, the edition I read this time was the "Revised and Expanded" edition which has recently been released as a 10th anniversary update to the original "Wild at Heart." To be honest it's been so long since I read the original "Wild at Heart" that I'm not sure which parts of this new "Revised and Expanded" edition were new and which parts were part of the original.

This book resonates with me. While there were times when I felt that he maybe slightly over emphasized the whole "wild" theme, used too many movie references, and I didn't always agree with his Biblical interpretation or theology; I still really enjoyed this book.

In this book, John Eldredge encourages men to be what God created them to be: wild at heart. He believes (and I agree) that God has placed with the heart of every man "a desperate desire for a battle to fight, an adventure to live, and a beauty to rescue. Throughout the book he builds on these three things and tries to show men how to get rid of the "fig leaves" that we hide behind and come alive as the warriors God intended us to be.

Earlier I mentioned that at times I feel that he may have slightly overemphasized the whole "wild" theme. What I meant by that is that at times while reading you get the idea that if you don't like climbing mountains, hunting bear, and hacking your way through a jungle you might not be a real man. While at times this does seem to be where he's going, it's really not. What he is trying to do is help rescue a man's heart, dream, and soul. He makes you examine your own life and what "wounds" you may be covering up or hiding behind.

I like his emphasis on "A Beauty to Rescue" and how a husband must fight for his wife. I was also challenged (as I'm soon to be a father for the first time) to be the kind of father that my daughter (and hopefully other children) needs.

I highly recommend this book to every man. I also suggested it to my wife for her to read it for I felt that it could help her to better understand me. She actually wound up finishing it before I did. Now we are both reading "Captivating" by John and Stasi Elderidge. I also plan to read "The Way of the Wild at Heart."

I guess if I was giving this book a rating it would be four stars out of five.

Disclosure of Material Connection: I received this book free from Thomas Nelson Publishers as part of their BookSneeze.com book review bloggers program. Jennifer Knapp and the deeper issue

By now you've probably heard about the contemporary Christian singer Jennifer Knapp who has publicly announced that she is a lesbian. Not too long ago Ray Boltz also "came out" that he was a homosexual.

Today the point of my blog is not really to address them and their sin; for what the Bible teaches about homosexuality is very clear. What I want to address in this post is what I think is a deeper issue. If you watch the video above you will see that Jennifer defends herself by questioning why, if homosexuality is a sin, is it any worse than any other sin? It is true that sin is sin. But, what really bothers me about episodes like this is that those condemning them never have a real answer to their argument about what makes their sin any different the one "coming out." The reason they don't have a good answer is because of their theology. Almost without fail those who respond in situations like this believe that everyone sins every day in word, thought, and deed and that "once you're saved your always saved." So when a preacher, such as the one in this video, goes on air condemning homosexuality it seems so hypocritical to the world because he too "sins every day in word thought and deed."

It seems to me that the bigger issue at stake here is about what sin is and what happens if a Christian sins. I believe the Bible teaches that sin is a willful violation of God's law (1 John 3:4) and if a Christian commits a willful act of sin they are no longer a Christian (1 John 3). God gives the Christian the power to say no to willful sin and live a victorious life without committing willful sins. Yes we still make mistakes and are human, but there is no excuse for willful sin! If a Christian commits willful sin they must repent and confess that sin and turn from it immediately and get back up and keep "running the race." If they do not they are no longer a Christian and in danger of judgment.

According to the Word of God, Jennifer Knapp is committing willful sin and is not a Christian. It's time for the Church to get a proper understanding about what sin is and what sin does if a Christian commits it. When we do then we will have a real answer to people like Jennifer Knapp when they commit sins such as she's committing. The real answer to her in a situation such as this would be to lovingly say to her: "Jennifer, because you are living in willful sin you have forfeited your relationship with Christ and you need to repent and turn from your sin so that you do not face judgment. Jesus loves you and died for you so that you could have victory over all willful sin." Then when she would ask, "What makes my sin any different than yours?" You could answer (if it's true about you), "Jennifer, God gives me the grace daily to overcome temptation and by His grace I do not commit any willful acts of sin. With every temptation He makes it possible for me to avoid sinning and live victoriously and He can for you as well if you will repent of your sins once again and trust in Him to save you and keep you."

I think the deeper issue here is a proper theology of sin.

    Quote of the day

“Where Christian perfection is not strongly and explicitly preached, there is seldom any remarkable blessing from God; and consequently, little life in the members of it.” - John Wesley

    Tag-along Tuesday

I've decided to add a regular feature to my blog where once a week on Tuesday's I'll share some links to some interesting posts, sites, etc that might be worth your time checking out. I've calling this feature "Tag-Along Tuesday's" because I'm having you "tag-along" to some of the things I'm reading and doing and because I can't think of anything better to call it. So here goes:
    • I'm wondering if I have this gene because I'm certain my weight has nothing to do with my eating and lack of exercise. ;-)
    • I'm enjoying the new ESVonline. It's especially nice if you already own the ESV Study Bible because you can then access the Study Bible's notes online. The ESVonline is still in beta and invitation only though (sorry I already gave out all my beta invites...)
    • I ordered the book "Twelve Extraordinary Women" by John MacArthur to give out to the ladies of my church for Mother's Day. At less than two bucks a book I figured it was a pretty good gift idea for all of the great ladies in my church.
    • I'm reading the book "Wild at Heart" again. This book resonates with me and I'll be posting a review soon.
    • I follow 167 blogs (most of the time just glancing at the titles of the posts to see if they're worth reading). According to my feed reader the site that I pay the most attention to is Lifehacker. This is my techno geek side revealing itself I guess...

The prosperity gospel is not the Gospel!

Yesterday in Sunday School we got into a discussion about the prosperity gospel. I've shared my disgust with the prosperity gospel on my blog before, but I thought I share my opinion again. The first video below is a short documentary about how the prosperity gospel is effecting Africa. The second video is by John Piper and it summarizes very well how I feel about the prosperity gospel. The third video is Piper again and in it he shares what I believe is the proper view of the Gospel and prosperity.

The "cat" that was a possum meets its Maker

Some time ago I blogged about my wife's surprise encounter with a possum in the middle of the night. Tonight I finally got the possum. It had been living very well off of our cat food. Don't know how much it weighed but it was very large! (I am now my wife's hero) ;-)

Sorry for the gross pic :-)

      April 15

April 15 is known for a lot of things - mostly for being the dreaded "Tax Day." But on April 15, 1947 something else happened. I'm a huge baseball fan (go Braves!) and on April 15, 1947 Jackie Robinson broke the color barrier in baseball becoming the first black man to play in the Major Leagues. He went on to have a stellar career and is in the Baseball Hall of Fame. Today ever player in the MLB will be wearing #42 on their jerseys in honor of Jackie Robinson.

Thinking about all of this this morning has got me to thinking...if baseball was integrated in 1947 I wonder when the majority of the church world is going to catch up? Sunday mornings are the most segrated time of the week and I believe it's time for that to end! I don't believe in "white churches" or "black churches." I believe in the Church - where everyone is welcomed and we all come together to worship Christ together. So let's come together and just think if we start today we'll only be 63 years behind Major League Baseball!

      March Madness madness

If you even slightly pay attention to sports you know that this years NCAA tournament was absolutely crazy! Duke won it all (unfortunately) and they were a #1 seed but that was the only "normal" thing that happened in the tournament.

For a long time things were looking good for me. I was first in our Tourney Pick'em group and seemingly sitting pretty - then the bottom fell out and I of course wound up on the bottom. Below are the final standings. I wound up 9th out of 11 - terrible as always. Congratulations to Marcus Evans for winning. Wesley Deaton was a close second and William Mahnken wound up third. Those three in the top three confirm to me just how "mad" this years March Madness was! =)

By the way, since Marcus is my best friend he gets a big fat nothing for winning! =) (I'll pat you on the back next time I see you Marcus)...
